I. Definition
A self-priming pump is a centrifugal pump capable of automatically drawing up water without requiring the suction pipeline to be initially filled with water.
II. Working Principle
Self-priming pumps come in various structural types.
High-viscosity pumps are ideal gear pumps for conveying highly viscous media, capable of handling viscosities of up to 200,000 cP. When pumping such media, the gear pump must deliver a high flow rate under significant pressure, with low power consumption and minimal internal leakage. Excessive viscosity increases flow resistance and reduces output power. Therefore, when selecting the medium to be conveyed, it is essential to strictly ensure that the operating temperature falls within the pump's adaptive range.
Three-screw pumps have been widely used in China's petroleum, chemical, metallurgical, machine tool, and shipbuilding industries, and have replaced centrifugal oil pumps, gear oil pumps, and reciprocating pumps in many applications.
High-viscosity pump pipelines are typically cleaned using two common methods: compressed air pigging and mechanical pigging (using a pig). The compressed air pigging process and its associated equipment are relatively simple, but the cleaning is often incomplete. For example, when cleaning pipelines used by high-viscosity gear pumps to transport palm oil, residual grease often remains adhered to the pipe walls.

Stainless steel gear pumps consist of a pair of meshing gears. The driving gear is fixed to the driving shaft, while the other end of the shaft extends outside the casing to be driven by a prime mover. The driven gear is mounted on a separate shaft.
